The Gray Blanket

by Alyssa Alvarez

gray/
and soft to the touch./
Ever been attached to an inanimate object this much?/
In the season of the Sun/
Supplemental heat/
& yet it's still in use/
to sweaty up some feet./
Threads shedding from the base/
Furs starting to feel coarse./
Still, the thought of parting from it/
makes my voice go horse./
lying with me if I dream in the night/
Standing as a companion when I cry or feel fright/
But now the faint tobacco /
And scent of ginger & honey shampoo/
seem to be much fainter/
beginning to subdue/

And I learn a bit more as I approach each day that/
This gray blanket is not you
